WASHINGTON — An investigation into the possible sale of generic Viagra to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. has uncovered an alarming increase in deaths among U. S. patients taking the impotence drug.
The drugmaker, the world's largest maker of prescription medicines, said Thursday that more than 3 million cases of erectile dysfunction have been reported since it began selling the drug in 2002. More than 4.8 million prescriptions were filled for Viagra, its generic version of the popular impotence drug Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug.
The U. Food and Drug Administration has warned patients against taking the impotence drug, noting that the drug may interact with the blood-thinning medicine, lovastatin, which is used to lower cholesterol and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
"Pfizer Inc. is aware of the increased number of reports of serious and potentially life-threatening cases of heart-related events," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
Viagra's manufacturer, Pfizer, said Thursday that more than 3 million cases of erectile dysfunction have been reported since its launch. The FDA is warning patients that more than 40 percent of cases have been related to the drug.
The company is the target of lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who alleged Pfizer Inc. is profiting from the drug's alleged harmful effects.
The drugmaker said in a statement that it would defend against the lawsuits "and the U. Department of Justice will vigorously pursue any appropriate civil action against Pfizer that may involve similar allegations."
Pfizer spokeswomanrequencyll said the company did not comment on Thursday about the results of the investigation.
Viagra is a popular drug for impotence, which often leads to erectile dysfunction.
In 2004, the FDA warned that patients taking the drug may have experienced heart-related events, such as chest pain, dizziness, and fainting. Viagra was also linked to a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and stroke.

Pfizer Inc. has repeatedly denied any involvement in the deaths of its patients, but has repeatedly sought compensation from physicians and hospitals.
The FDA issued a warning last month that Viagra might pose a "serious and potentially life-threatening risk" to patients taking the drug and that the drug should not be used as a substitute for a doctor's consultation.
The warning was made after the Food and Drug Administration warned that patients taking the drug may have experienced heart-related events, such as chest pain, dizziness, and fainting.
Viagra was the first drug approved for impotence and was developed by Pfizer Inc., a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. It was approved in 1998 and became part of the company's top-selling product, Pfizer Inc.'s erectile dysfunction drug, in 2003. The drug was the world's second-biggest seller after Viagra.
